Abaca Wall Backs, 1991/2022
Originally done in 1991, part of an installation referencing my mother’s hospitalization. She was dying, it was the Gulf War… there was death in the air. Dim colored lights behind the ‘backs’ referenced the fading of life.
In the updated 2022 version, the new LED lighting adds an interior glow, connecting the forms to a control box and onto the gallery floor. The bright fluid flowing light simulates a pulse, or blood running through the body. The piece is now about life.
Material: Sprayed abaca forms, plastic hoses, LED lighting, sandblasted plastic
Size: 84″ × 144″ × 16″
