Sentient Matrix, Installed 2014
Commissioned by The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Alabama-Mississippi Chapter Legacy of Leadership honoring M. Miller Gorrie.
Located at the Civitan International Research Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The sculpture is an abstraction of the central nervous system (CNS), an exploration and translation of scientific information into art. Within translucent abaca forms moving lights suggest the linear rhythms of nerve impulses. When the light turns red and stops, it represents what happens in multiple sclerosis (MS) when the myelin and nerve are damaged.
Materials: Abaca and kozo paper fiber, acrylic, gel medium, programmable light-emitting diodes, microcontroller, aluminum, stainless steel, and PVC
Size: approx. 16’ x 20' x 21'
