ENVIRONMENT: STRUCTURE/SOUND III

an immersive ritual experience

Alabama Center for Architecture

June 7 - August 23, 2024

In this exhibit, an early piece from 1979—Environment: Structure/Sound III—invokes the interaction of ritual and personal relationships via the use color, movement and sound. Sixteen canvas-covered forms with gradually changing colors stand in a circle, as a low acoustical sound murmurs, moving through.

Three separate sound tracks coming from the forms create a sonic space. The objective is to design a visual, spatial, and kinesthetic experience for the viewer that invites meditation. The accompanying drawings give insight into the artist’s creative process. In the small gallery (conference room) are early sketches concerning the sound, an intricate process of experimentation using the sculptural forms to determine the score. In the space next door (Ground Floor Contemporary) are later works relating to ideas explored in the installation.

The installation is about “making” a space, shaping a ritual in which the viewer participates and becomes a part of the piece.

Environment: Structure/Sound III is as much about our understanding of the passage of time as it is about our experience of space. Visitors who take the time to look, hear, and ponder will be rewarded with an experience that deepens and enriches their sense of the world.”

A Review of ENVIRONMENT: STRUCTURE/SOUND III EXHIBITION

Forms Scoring I and II, 2024

The prints speak to the process of creating ENVIRONMENT: STRUCTURE/SOUND. With the RISO printer, the layering of transparent color is intense and produces a similar effect as the buildup of airbrush paint did with the original forms. The added drawings of the score for the sound and images represent the stone circles. The new print process is another way to explore the multi-dimensional experience of the work.
